CULTURE CURRENTS™

Water covers about 71% of the earth’s surface. 97% of that water is found in the oceans as salt water. The ocean is the home to 228,450 known species — and as many as 2 million more that remain a total mystery. It supplies half our oxygen.

The ocean provides lots of food --- much more than just seafood. Ingredients from the sea are found in many foods such as peanut butter and soymilk. Many Medicines that help ­fight cancer, arthritis, Alzheimer's disease, and heart disease. include ingredients from the ocean. The ocean is our planet's life support system.

The Seafarers Ministry of the Golden Gate (SMGG) has developed an education initiative called Culture Currents, which explores the significance of maritime traditions in the development of diverse cultures in the world. Likewise, Culture Currents probes the contributions, influence and impact of distinct cultural groups on maritime traditions and practices.  We are launching the series in April, celebrating the significant history of African Americans and their engagements with the sea.
