Seafarers transport 90% of the world’s goods. Without them, we would not have most of the things we rely on every day….phones, clothing, electronics, furniture and more. Seafarers spend many months at sea- far away from home and loved ones. They experience loneliness, violent weather, injury, threats of piracy and even hijacking.
The Day of the Seafarer, sponsored by the United Nations, is set aside to give thanks to them for their contribution to the world economy, our standard of living and for the risks and personal costs they bear to do their jobs.
Every day SMGG-at-the-IMC cares for seafarers from all over the world that come to the Port of Oakland, providing transportation, moral and emotional support and the welcoming spirit Oakland is well known for.
