CELEBRATE WORLD MARITIME DAY AND ACKNOWLEDGE THE 50-YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF THE ADOPTION OF 1974 SOLAS CONVENTION. Established by the United Nations in 1978, World Maritime Day is meant to raise awareness about the important and vital contribution of the shipping industry to the world. The 2024 World Maritime Day theme – is Navigating the Future: Safety First. SOLAS – The International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea is the key international maritime treaty regulating maritime safety with minimum safety standards in the construction, equipment, and operation of merchant ships.
LEARN AND DISCUSS A panel of maritime experts including U. S. Coast Guard Rear Admiral Andrew Sugimoto and Brian Brandes, Port of Oakland will discuss Seafarer Welfare, Maritime Business and Public Safety in a Time of Climate Change, Rising Seas and Decarbonization. Stas Margaronis, West Coast Ports Correspondence at the American Journal of Transportation will moderate the panel.
SUPPORT SEAFARERS who are at the crux of maritime. Hear more about the essential role of maritime welfare organizations, like SMGG-at-the-IMC, and their Full Speed Ahead Agenda for Seafarers Welfare and Maritime Promotion. Life at sea is hard, risky, and stressful. Many seafarers regularly complete long-term voyages isolated from friends, family and loved ones for up to nine months at a time. We owe them a lot. Maritime Welfare Organizations help give them what they deserve.

THE CHRISTMAS AT SEA SHIP WELCOME & VISIT FORCE
Established by the United Nations in 1978, World Maritime Day is meant to recognize the importance of the maritime industry and its essential role in the world.
The 2023 theme, MARPOL at 50 – Our Commitment Goes On, spotlights the fifty-year anniversary of the adoption of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL). MARPOL is the main international convention covering prevention of pollution of the marine environment by ships from operational or accidental causes.
Our Bay Area maritime industry has embraced MARPOL and the spirit of World Maritime Day through many innovations and programs that improve the maritime environment, maritime safety and security, and international shipping.
As a maritime welfare organization and a proud member of the Bay Area maritime community, Seafarers Ministry of the Golden Gate at the International Maritime Center, aims to do our part to raise awareness about the multiple contributions the shipping industry makes in the Bay Area and places all over the globe.
